The car is described by the Japanese brand as a ‘high-end, next-generation SUV’, and could evolve into a future range-topping model.
The GT stands for ‘Ground Tourer’ – the concept being that the car can travel over long distances no matter what the terrain. It showcases Mitsubishi’s latest design language and is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
The visuals are far bolder than current Mitsubishi product with narrow windows and tall metal, and a swept back windscreen. The vertical light clusters are also a distinctive change to the brand’s current look.
However the front end as a whole does follow Mitsubishi’s latest ‘Dynamic Shield’ visual identity, emphasising the safety aspects of the brand’s cars, bold chromed streaks on either side of the grille shielding the Three-Diamond badge which is said to create a 3D suggestion of motion.
The GT-PHEV’s powertrain is the latest iteration of the plug-in hybrid drivetrain offered in the production Oultander PHEV. In the GT variant it combines a 2.4-litre petrol engine with three electric motors, and can offer a range of up to 75 miles in electric-only mode. Combined with the engine the range can go up to 750 miles.
